The Need

According to WHO, based on samples of 1000 people, the blood donation rate is 32.6 donations in high-income countries, 15.1 donations in upper-middle-income countries, 8.1 donations in lower-middle-income countries and 4.4 donations in low-income countries. Social networks are full of posts from people and blood centers asking to donate blood. Most of these posts remain ignored.

* In Ukraine we use YouScan allowing to monitor posts written in Ukrainian. Potentially we can use Bing Search, Google Alerts, Mention and other tools.

The Idea

Blood donor requests from social media can help local NGOs and organizations like Red Cross or World Health Organization to perform a real-time analysis in specific region and to react fast. Accumulated historical data can help to predict demand and supply of the blood and recruit donors before the shortage actually happens.

The Solution

With social media monitoring tool* we able to get all posts related to blood donation. With LUIS, a NLP tool from Microsoft, we detect posts where people are looking for blood donors, extract useful information such as blood center's location, number of donors required, blood group type, rhesus, contact details etc. Based on this data we ask blood donors to donate blood as soon as possible when situation in the specific area becomes critical.
